Step types

A form is a sequence of steps, and the step type decides what that screen does — asks a question, shows something, records a voice. Add New Step in the builder offers them grouped the same way as below.

This list is generated from the app itself, so it cannot drift out of date: a step type that exists in spOken has a page here.

Things you ask

  • Text Input — a written answer.
  • Email — an email address — and, if you want it, proof that the address is real.
  • Multiple Choice — a list of options to pick from.
  • Rating Scale — a score on a scale, tapped rather than typed.
  • Checkbox — a single yes-or-no tick.
  • Date / Time — a date, a time, or both, from a picker rather than a typed string — so you get something you can sort by.
  • Guest Info — the details you need about the person themselves, gathered in one step instead of five separate questions.
  • Legal Consent — terms shown in full, with an explicit acceptance — a release for using someone's voice, a privacy notice, whatever your situation needs.

Things they record or send

  • Audio Recording — a voice recording, made in the browser.
  • Video Recording — the same as an [audio recording](audio.
  • Advanced Media Recorder — one step that accepts whatever the person is comfortable with.
  • Image Upload — a picture from their device — a headshot for the episode page, a logo, a screenshot.
  • File Upload — any file: a document, a slide deck, an audio file recorded elsewhere.

Things you show

  • Statement — something to read, with nothing to answer — a briefing, a warning, an instruction that matters before the next question.
  • Media Display — an image or a video you show them.
  • YouTube Video — a YouTube video embedded in the step, for anything already published there.

Beginnings and endings

The screen a form shows after the last step is not a step type — see closing screens.
